The Second Vatican Council - We often hear mentioned the Second Vatican Council in Church teaching and Church references, so it is good to reflect on what was the Council and why is it so important. In the history of the Church there have been 21 Councils of the Church. A Council is called by the Pope the Successor of St. Peter to discuss, debate and discern the will of God relating to certain aspects of Faith. Over the centuries Councils have defined Dogmas and Doctrines of the Church. A Council is named usually after the place where it meets. The Second Vatican Council gets its name from the place where it was held, that is, in the Vatican. The Bishops of the Church in union with the Pope are the ones who make decisions. Pope John XXIII was elected to the papacy in 1958 and on 25th January 1959 he made a surprise announcement, he was calling an Ecumenical Council in 1962. He said, “We announce to you, indeed trembling a little with emotion, but at the same time with humble resolution of intention, the name and the proposal of a twofold celebration: a diocesan synod for the city, and an ecumenical council for the Universal Church.” It was not expected and many thought of John XXIII as an interim Pope. He surprised everyone by calling such a Council. Unlike previous Councils where there often was a crisis in relation to some teaching or understanding of Faith. Pope John did not call the Council to debate a particular crisis but to reflect on how the Church can engage with the modern world in proclaiming Christ. He said at the opening of the Council on the 11th of October 1962; “The decision to hold an ecumenical council came to Us in the first instance in a sudden flash of inspiration. We have every confidence that the Church, in the light of this Council, will gain in spiritual riches. New sources of energy will be opened to her, enabling her to face the future without fear. ”
The Year Faith urges the faithful to rediscover the faith. It is good for all either to; ‘Discover’ for the first time what the Council said or to re-discover the beauty and vision of the Council. The Council renews the Church in the Joy of Following Christ. Let us reflect on it once more.
